How I collect information

Web forms, comments and email

This website uses web forms for:

  • Contacting me.
  • Requesting a quote.
  • Signing up for regular updates, newsletters, information of interest and other freebies.
  • Opening an account for my online store (refer to The Content Shop below).

While some information is collected for the preparation and transaction of a service, I only collect the information you voluntarily input into these forms to enact that transaction. I also offer alternative methods of contact via social media, Skype, phone and email.

This website also has a comments section attached to pages associated with “The Blog”. Making a comment is voluntary and the information you include is at your discretion. If you leave a comment, you provide me with permission to publish your comment for free but as you retain ownership of the comment, you can always contact me to have it removed.

By leaving a comment, I also collect the data shown in the comments form. As well, I collect your IP address and the browser user agent string. This is to help with spam detection. An anonymized string created from your email address may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

If you contact me, I may collect your contact details and any other information you give me, such as a your name, company and website and a copy of the correspondence you send. I will only use this information for the purposes prescribed in the correspondence that you agree to receive.

Security logs

This website runs security apps that collects information about some users in a text file security log. This information includes:

  • Remote addresses.
  • Host names.
  • Request methods.
  • Request URLs.
  • Query string.
  • Http User Agent.

The purpose of this information is to:

  • Secure the website.
  • Monitor suspicious activity including post and get requests that have been blocked or forbidden by the firewall plugin.
  • Diagnose whether plugins and third-party services are functioning correctly.

Security logs can only be accessed by a person with access to the FTP login information or web host control. These logs capture information relating to errors, spammers and hacking attempts and are regularly reviewed and purged.  You may also be interested in reading the section on Security of Data.

What I collect and store

While you visit my site, I track:

  • Products you’ve viewed: I’ll use this to, for example, show you products you’ve recently viewed.
  • Location, IP address and browser type: I’ll use this for purposes like estimating taxes and shipping.
  • Shipping address: I’ll ask you to enter this so I can, for instance, estimate shipping before you place an order, and send you the order!

When you purchase an item or service through The Content Shop, I will ask you to provide information including your name, billing address, shipping address, email address, phone number, credit card/payment details and optional account information like username and password.   • Set up your account for our store.

Who on my “team” has access

Members of my “team” have access to the information you provide. At the moment that’s just me, the administrator, who can access:

I share information with third parties who help me provide the orders and store services to you; for example —

Payments & Paypal

I only accept payments through PayPal for orders through The Content Store. When processing payments, some of your data will be passed to PayPal. This data includes information required to process or support the payment, such as the purchase total and billing information.

I share information about users who use comment on this site with Akismet anti-spam service owned and operated by Automattic. What I do with information I collect

Aside from the reasons already provided, I also use information about your visit to fulfill obligations under:

  • Any sale and purchase contract.
  • Render services such as a guarantee, warranty or other sales services.
  • Any other contract that may exist between you and my business as a digital freelance writer and creative author.

For the purpose described above, information may be shared with affiliated service providers or providers of web and taxation services either in Australia or overseas. This may include but is not limited to:

Why I collect information about your use

Aside from using this data to improve how my webpages perform in search engines and improve sales, I also use this data to improve your experience of this website and to deliver products or services that you purchase or download for free.

How long do I retain your data

If you leave a comment, I retain the comment and its metadata indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For customers that register on this website, I also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their own personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). As the sole administrator, only I can see and edit that information.

If you complete a general survey, questionnaire or poll on this website only the data you entered is retained indefinitely. I do not retain personal identifiers unless you provide it. As a policy, I do not associate personal data with general survey, questionnaire or poll results on this website.

Task instruction forms (TIFs) and interview questionnaires (IQs) conducted privately for clients about their products or services maybe retained for up to seven years. I store completed TIFs & IQs in a secured filing system. They are never stored on this website. Please refer to your TIFs and IQs for further details.

If you request a quote or use The Content Shop, any data associated with a purchase or transaction will be retained for as long as required by law. The Australian Taxation Office requires tax records to be kept for a period of five years.

How I protect your data

As a sole trader, I take the responsibility of securing your information seriously. I act as the data manager, controller and processor for this website.  A professional WordPress security app provides additional login security, firewall security, regularly scans for anomalies, quarantines suspicious files, provides anti-spam and anti-hacking measures and monitors and reports suspicious attempts. I review this information regularly and act immediately to investigate any suspicious activity.

In addition, I have purchased an SSL certificate for this website, that means information you send to this website is secure.

All computers and technology that I personally use in the course of my business used fully licensed security software and firewalls. I also update all software, apps and plugins either automatically or as soon as I am made aware of available updates.

Collection of information about minors

I do not knowingly or encourage the collection of information about children or their use of this website. My blog is aimed at an adult reader and my website services and store are aimed at businesses.

As I use PayPal for the transaction of financial services, I also assume all account holders who wish to purchase services or products from my online store are 18 years or over.

Access to information about you

I will not sell or knowingly give-away your private information to marketers or any other 3rd parties for commercial or personal use.

Government organizations seeking information on registered users including authors, guest bloggers, visitors or commentators may require a warrant to obtain information.

I may also require a 30 day turnaround time to verify and retrieve information.

To opt out of Google Analytics you should disable or refuse the cookie, disable JavaScript, or use Google’s opt out tool.
